Beef and Peppercorn Stir Fry

Brown 500g of sliced scotch fillet in a wok with olive oil, put aside and retain juice.

Brown one large onion in juices still in wok, add two tablespoons ground ginger.

Add two sliced capsicums and 100g dried shitake mushrooms.

Add soy sauce, tin of green peppercorns and beef back in to wok.

Add handful basil.

Serve on bed of rice, 2 minute packet okay if rushed job, with a squeeze of lime or lemon.

VoilĂ !

Unfortunately it was so tasty we didn't manage a photo:

A Coopers Pale is an excellent accompaniment, as is Elizabeth.

Eat & Drink in San Francisco

In no particular order are some places I enjoy while in SF.

Paulines Pizza

Paulines Pizza on Valencia & 14th has awesome pizza. I found out last night that they make their own ice cream and have a wine bar as well. Very cool.

Magnolia

Magnolia up on Haight & Massonic is good for a wholesome feed and a pint of their own brew.

Rosamunde & Toronado

This German bratwurst place on Haight (near Fillmore) has top grub. Go next door to Toronado for any pint you can imagine from Europe. Pro Tip: if you can not see what you want on the menu, ask for the specials in the fridge out the back.

Beretta

Beretta is fantastic for a proper sit down restaurant right in the Mission. Drink the absinthe and try not to have a fantastic time at Elbo Room just down the way. Memories...

Bi-Rite

You absolutely must try the ice cream and chocolate at Bi-Rite. I'll be heading back there this week, been too long.

I must credit Douglas Butler for the introduction to Beretta and Bi-Rite, as well as the Saturday morning markets at the wharf (get there early for the best grub, before all the tourists come!). Steve Smith plugged Toronado and Rosamundas, as did Pete Moore. Giancarlo Lionetti and Jesse Gibbs are credited for Paulines Pizza. I am walking well worn tracks no doubt, and they are well worn for good reason!

Spoonful - A Happiness Companion

I've just gone and bought the first issue of Spoonful, I can't wait to get this on my doorstep. Grab your own copy over at Spoonful now.

Oh yeah, Thea is one of those, creating something better. One to watch.

City Boys Live the Country Life

First evening at Bega for the TC 2010 Road Trip. Where to next year, Vegas?!

Catch of the Day

We returned home at midday after setting off for a deep sea fishing expedition at 5am. This is just the start of the days catch, and let me tell you, yellowfin tune sashimi just caught is fantastic.

Ouch!

I took a tumble at Middle Head, snapped it too.

Hot Chocolate. Make it good. Make me a fatty.

From Chicago. Yum.

Green Sausages

This evening was a learning exercise. One, can I stomach green sausages. Two, how do I know when they are cooked.

I'll start by clarifying, the sausages were fresh. They came direct from Hudson Meats in Cammeray and were Spinach, Ricotta, Pine Nut and Chicken. Very nice to boot! Liz picked them up along with some chicken schnitzel which also turned out to be fantastic.

How to cook? Well I ended up pan frying them - the green sausages and the schnitzel - with some butter. The Right Decision. Given the inability to tell when they were cooked I took the knife to them after around 15 minutes. They were firm inside and lightly browned on the outer.

What else? Well, Liz and I shared the chicken schnitzel and had a sausage each. Chuck a potato on the boil along with a side salad of peach, prosciutto and rocket.

All in all very well done, and we were very well fed. No desert for Liz tonight. For me it was back to some chocolate chip cookies (home made of course, with sultanas and goji berries soaked in schnapps to give them some oomph).
